Several districts in South India have declared a one-day school holiday today as Cyclone Ditwah continues to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds across coastal regions. The administrations of Nellore and Annamayya districts in Andhra Pradesh, along with the government of Puducherry, have ordered the closure of all schools as a precautionary safety measure.

Why Are Schools Closed?

Cyclone Ditwah, currently active over the southwest Bay of Bengal, is expected to cause intense rainfall, localized flooding, and disruptions in several parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Authorities have issued alerts urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

School Holiday in Nellore & Annamayya (Andhra Pradesh)

The Nellore District Collector, Mogili Venkateswarlu, officially announced that:

All government, private, and aided schools in the district will remain closed today, December 1, 2025.

Anganwadis will also remain closed.

The decision was taken due to the risk of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several mandals.

District officials confirmed that the priority is ensuring student and staff safety, especially in low-lying and vulnerable areas.

Meanwhile, the administration of Annamayya district has issued a similar order, suspending in-person classes for the day. Parents and students have been advised to stay in contact with their respective schools for updates on possible extensions of holidays depending on weather conditions.

Puducherry Announces Holiday for All Schools

The Home and Education Minister, A. Namassivayam, declared that all schools in Puducherry will remain closed today, citing expected heavy rainfall under the influence of Cyclone Ditwah.

Officials are monitoring the situation closely and will issue further directions if necessary.

Tamil Nadu Impact — Holiday Not Confirmed Yet

Although Cyclone Ditwah has brought widespread rain and disruptions across Tamil Nadu, the state government has not yet issued a statewide school holiday notification.

Districts may announce closures independently based on local weather developments.
