The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, has officially opened the gateway for its Summer Internship Programme 2026. This initiative is specifically designed for postgraduate students who are eager to contribute to global climate solutions while working at one of India’s premier research hubs in Pune.

Key Highlights and Essential Deadlines

Aspiring scientists should note that the application deadline is April 5, 2026. The programme typically spans a duration of 2 to 3 months, usually scheduled between May and July. Unlike standard corporate internships, this research internship provides students with direct access to sophisticated high-performance computing systems and advanced meteorological instrumentation.

While the official notification does not specify a monthly stipend, outstation candidates may benefit from hostel accommodation, which is provided to approximately 20 selected students on a first-come, first-served basis.

Eligibility Criteria for Master’s Students

To maintain a high standard of research, the selection process is highly rigorous. Candidates must meet the following benchmarks:

Academic Excellence: A minimum of 55% marks or equivalent CGPA in all examinations from Class 10 (SSC) onwards.

Educational Background: Currently pursuing an M.Sc, M.Tech, or MS in disciplines such as Atmospheric Sciences, Physics, Meteorology, Environmental Science, or related Engineering fields.

Mentor Consent: A unique requirement for this year is obtaining email consent from an IITM scientist before submitting the final form.

Application Steps and Documentation

The online application must be completed through the official IITM Pune jobs portal. Candidates are required to upload a single, consolidated PDF (maximum 3 MB) containing:

A detailed CV or Resume highlighting specific research interests.

Self-attested mark sheets from SSC through the current semester.

A Letter of Recommendation (LoR) from the Head of Department (HoD).

The mandatory email approval from the proposed scientist mentor.

Why Choose the IITM Research Internship?

This programme serves as an exceptional career advancement tool for those looking to pursue a PhD or a specialized career in weather prediction and monsoon dynamics. By working on live projects, interns gain practical exposure to data analysis and climate modeling that is rarely available in a standard university curriculum.
