FAIMA Demands ₹30,000 Stipend for MP MBBS Interns

The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has urged the Madhya Pradesh state government to increase the monthly allowance for MBBS interns from ₹14,337 to ₹30,000. Representatives formally addressed letters to Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Rajendra Shukla, citing escalating inflation, rising living costs, and heavy clinical workloads as primary reasons for the requested hike.

According to the association, the current monthly compensation fails to support trainee doctors undergoing mandatory practical training. The appeal highlights growing dissatisfaction among medical graduates across the state regarding stagnant pay scales.

Current Stipend vs Requested Monthly Allowance

The table below outlines the core details of FAIMA's proposal submitted to the state authorities:

Primary JustificationLow state parity, rising living expensesWorkload, inflation, financial sustainability

Heavy Workloads and Financial Strain Cited by Interns

FAIMA emphasized that intern doctors form a critical backbone of public healthcare delivery across state medical institutions. Trainee doctors regularly work extended hours managing essential duties in outpatient departments (OPDs), inpatient care wards, emergency departments, operating theaters, delivery rooms, and community healthcare centers.

Despite handling intensive patient-care responsibilities, interns in Madhya Pradesh receive significantly lower pay than their peers in several other Indian states. Medical graduates report that the current stipend of ₹14,337 per month falls far short of covering basic daily costs, including:

  • Food and basic nutritional requirements
  • Local travel and transportation fees
  • Essential housing and accommodation costs
  • Academic materials and daily personal living expenses

Key Proposals Submitted to the Government

To address these financial challenges and create a better training environment, FAIMA outlined four main demands in its formal communication:

  1. Elevate the current monthly MBBS internship stipend from ₹14,337 to ₹30,000.
  2. Establish formal discussions between state officials, intern representatives, and medical bodies.
  3. Implement periodic stipend adjustments aligned with inflation rates and actual living costs.
  4. Formally recognize the vital operational role played by intern doctors within the state's public healthcare system.

Current Government Response and Status

The demand follows a series of representations submitted directly by affected intern doctors, who pointed out stark pay disparities compared to neighboring jurisdictions. Representatives argue that establishing financial parity would alleviate hardship and allow medical graduates to focus fully on clinical training.

At present, the Madhya Pradesh state administration has not issued an official decision or announcement regarding the requested stipend adjustment. Medical associations and intern doctors continue to await a response from state health authorities.
